Crafting Inclusive Search Processes

The Work Shouldn’t Suck team distinguished themselves beyond all expectations. Their unwavering commitment to centering anti-racism, their kindness and care and their patience with us as we navigated a new process and workflow were exemplary. Not only did they help us find an extraordinary candidate but they also helped define new recruiting methods for Opera Philadelphia.”
— David Devan, General Director & President, Opera Philadelphia

Most hiring processes are pretty dusty having remained largely unchanged since 1982. What if a search process was built to be inclusive? What if it reflected your organization’s values and commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression? What if it was created in a way that developed internal capacity to apply an equity lens?

The possibilities afforded during the search process make it an amazing opportunity to practice and live your values. Why not craft the process in way that models alignment with your values instead of how “everyone else does it?” Why not create a process that’s transparent, inclusive, equitable, and accountable?

Our approach leverages learning from contemporary HR practices, anti-racism and anti-oppression thought-leadership, and developmental evaluation, to create a bespoke, values-aligned hiring process for your organization. When working towards this goal for your search, we believe that it’s best when we work together — as an extension of your team not as an outsourced function. Our goal is to help you create a framework and process that fits you and your organization, and that you can adjust and iterate on in future searches. Want to learn more?

Our Three Approaches

Executive Search

Who’s this for: You’d like for us to design and manage the bulk of the sourcing and search process for senior-level positions.

What is it: Our approach to executive search is to be a closely-knit extension of your team for the months that we work together. We use a developmental evaluation approach to help co-create materials and processes that you can use in future searches, with or without external assistance. It begins with an in-depth “discovery” phase, creation of marketing materials and search collateral, and then re-imagining and designing every piece of the search process to co-create a bespoke and values-centered process. This can feel a bit like building a plane while flying it, but it allows us all to land it exactly where we need it.

Hiring Process Consultation

Who’s this for: For any level search, your team is conducting the sourcing and search, but appreciate some values-centered guidance on the various components of the process.

What is it: Our hiring consultation is designed to advise — and work in parallel with — your internal team and processes. The relationship is crafted to help inform the work that you and your team are leading and completing, while centering your values. Taking place over 4-5 consultation sessions throughout your active search, we assist you in conceptualizing and sketching an entire values-centered search process arc; offer guidance and edits for collateral, interview construction and questions; and, finally, crafting the offer process and onboarding stages.

Online Courses

Who’s this for: The DIY’ers out there.

What is it: We offer two hiring-related courses. The first is our entirely asynchronous 10-module “Hire with Confidence” that covers in-depth every single part of the hiring arc. The second is our brand new, live four-session “Inclusive Hiring: Re-Imagining the Search Process.” Both explore how you can create a hiring process that's uniquely suited for you, your organization’s needs and values, whether that organization is 5 or 500 people, whether you're searching for seasonal volunteers, board members, or full-time employees.
